Identity Theft! *ALERT*
Everyone, this is a MAJOR plea! If you have an e-bay account or PayPal account please, please, please be careful for e-mails notifying you of "updates" to your account or "charges to your paypal" account!! Here's one I received:
******************************* It said that I had just been charged a certain amount of money and to click the "link" to "dispute" any charges! They would then ask for your SS number and/or PAYPAL, EBAY info and password! I got ahold of PayPal at [email protected] and they confirmed that this WAS a spoof! Thankfully, I DID NOT click on the "link"... I went straight to my paypal account FIRST... and these charges had NOT been added! Afterwards, I clicked the "link" in the paypal... and an "security" box popped! It was not a "paypal" site after all! So everyone PLEASE be careful of these scam/identity thefts!!!

Re: Identity Theft! *ALERT*
yes everyone please. i have gotten several also for the charges and for updating information. always always it cant be said enough. when you get emails like this log into paypal.com and see for yourself. another big flag if you do click on the links DO NOT enter your information (passwords, usernames) look at the site the www. will not be paypals. ALWAYS DO SEND SUSPCIOUS EMAILS TO THE ADDY. make sure you send everything just forward the whole thing that way paypal can have an easier time doing their thing.

Re: Identity Theft! *ALERT*
I posted something similar here last week Karen. It does seem that these phishing scams are on the increase lately. The easy way to spot them is to see where the link in the email goes. You don't even usually have to click on it. Just holding the mouse pointer over the link displays the target on the status line of most email clients (Eudora does this). If the URL is anything other than www.paypal.com , it aint from paypal.
The last one I got took me to a redirect tracker via juno. These are set up by the scammer so when they get their server shut down, they can move on and just repoint the link to the new server so the old emails go there. If you end up on a domain with just an IP address, that's another clue that it's a scam. I did a reverse lookup on the IP and called the ISP's security center. The site was shut down the next day, but had moved to some Irianian telephone center (ripe.com) Be on guard folks. The email and the web sites for these idiots are dressed very nicely with lots of paypal graphics and real paypal links, but the page where they want you to enter the info sends your info straight to the scammer. I just went now and checked the scam email I got last week and the redirect at juno is dead (I emailed juno about this, too). Yea! Killed another, but they'll be back. Opps, I didn't realize I was sticking up a sticky. ![]()
